Storia della filosofia del lavoro

Histoire philosophique du travail (Vrin, 2022), curato da Frank Fischbach, Anne Merker, Pierre-Marie Morel ed Emmanuel Renault, è uno dei risultati del progetto di ricerca «Approches philosophiques de la centralité du travail» diretto da Fischbach e Renault tra il 2014 e il 2017. A loro due si deve l’interessante introduzione, a cui seguono sedici saggi (per i titoli e gli autori, rinvio all’indice) organizzati in due sezioni, la prima dedicata alla filosofia antica, la seconda, più ampia, dedicata alla filosofia moderna. Completa il volume, una bibliografia che amplia i riferimenti proposti dai singoli saggi e che si rivolge quasi esclusivamente alla filosofia contemporanea, in particolare ai più recenti sviluppi della Teoria critica francese, di cui, d’altronde, Fischbach e Renault sono esponenti.
Histoire philosophique du travail non ambisce a proporsi come una «storia della filosofia» sul tema del lavoro. I curatori non hanno ricercato né la sistematicità né la completezza che avrebbe richiesto una simile opera: rimandano ai sette volumi curati da Antimo Negri (Negri 1980-1981) e al progetto in fieri di Jean-Philippe Deranty. I saggi, infatti, sono stati scelti tra gli interventi di tre diverse giornate di studio, tenutesi, tra il 2015 e il 2017, nell’ambito di suddetto progetto di ricerca, e presentano, pertanto, una certa aleatorietà. Così, sebbene i curatori stessi riconoscano che mancano, ad esempio, la filosofia medioevale e quella contemporanea (cfr. p. 11), nondimeno va notato che la selezione dei saggi riduce la filosofia antica a quella greca da cui, però, è escluso Platone (che pure era oggetto di più di una conferenza). Al contempo, occorre segnalare la pubblicazione dell’antologia curata dagli stessi Fischbach e Renault (Fischbach, Renault 2022) con cui integrano Histoire philosophique du travail della parte mancante sulla filosofia contemporanea (nell'indice, ad esempio, si trovano Simone De Beauvoir, Adina Schwartz e Elizabeth Anderson).
Alle mancanze contenutistiche, si può forse aggiungere una mancanza di tipo pratico, quella di un indice analitico. Componendo una mappa del nutrito elenco di termini che gravitano attorno al lavoro e che ricorrono nell’arco del volume, un indice analitico avrebbe certamente agevolato il lettore a muoversi trasversalmente tra i saggi e sarebbe stato coerente con un interesse teorico che i curatori sottolineano nell’Introduzione (cfr. pp. 12-13), cioè seguire le inflessioni di significato che, nel corso della storia della filosofia, i concetti che si riferiscono al lavoro hanno assunto. Inoltre, tanto più in un volume come questo, che presenta una notevole varietà tra gli autori trattati, ciò avrebbe reso possibile reperire i diversi fili rossi che s’intessono nelle riflessioni filosofiche sul lavoro. Piacere, macchina, corpo, dignità, ma anche democrazia, salute, tempo, solo per ipotizzare alcune delle possibili voci.
Tuttavia, non si può additare come lacunosa questa Histoire philosophique du travail, poiché si tratta di un progetto pionieristico e poiché presenta, comunque, una certa organicità. Sin dall’Introduzione, intitolata Historicité et centralité du travail, Fischbach e Renault fissano ed esplicitano il fulcro del volume, che è la centralità del lavoro. A quest’ultima è legato il chiaro obiettivo teorico a cui essi mirano, cioè favorire una rivalutazione delle «risorse» che la storia della filosofia mette a disposizione «per pensare l’importanza delle diverse poste in gioco del lavoro» (p. 9). L’intento è invitare a «rivisitare la storia della filosofia occidentale dal punto di vista del lavoro e così elevare il tema del lavoro alla dignità filosofica che merita e che raramente gli è stata riconosciuta dalla storia della filosofia» (p. 10).
Questo è il tono che i curatori danno al volume e a cui tutti i contributi s’accordano. Gli autori e le autrici si propongono di rileggere tale filosofo o filosofa o una certa tradizione, per dimostrare il valore euristico di tematizzare il lavoro all’interno della loro produzione. Pertanto, per una valida recensione dei singoli saggi, servirebbe l’intervento di altrettanti specialisti. Ad esempio, Morel (Démocrite et le travail technique. Comment produire en régime atomiste?)sceglie di interrogare «la coerenza globale della filosofia di Democrito» non sulla pista più battuta dell’etica bensì «per quanto riguarda l’attitudine umana a modificare la natura attraverso il lavoro» (p. 88), mentre Frédéric Porcher (Nietzsche, penseur du travail?) intende mostrare che in Nietzsche è possibile individuare una nozione positiva di lavoro su cui egli sviluppa la sua critica, alla quale, invece, si fermano normalmente i suoi interpreti.
È possibile, quindi, definire una prima portata dell’espressione «centralità del lavoro». Bisogna intenderla come il tentativo di contrastare l’idea che il lavoro sia un tema poco rilevante nella storia della filosofia o che ha acquisito interesse solo recentemente, con la modernità. Fischbach e Renault vogliono, invece, «rendere manifesta la presenza costante del tema del lavoro, rendere percettibili un più ampio numero delle sue implicazioni, e far apparire la ricchezza dei concetti e delle problematiche attraverso le quali esso è stato pensato» (p. 11). In altri termini, si tratta di affermare la centralità del lavoro per smuovere la filosofia dalla sua posizione affine alla «lunga tradizione di svalorizzazione delle attività lavorative» (p. 9).
È un obiettivo piuttosto urgente per Fischbach e Renault. Infatti, la filosofia, dopo aver assecondato il primo discorso sulla fine del lavoro (cfr. Rifkin 1995), potrebbe assecondare anche il nuovo discorso sulla fine del lavoro che si sta diffondendo e che si basa sull’intelligenza artificiale e il machine learning. Riprendendo le analisi di A. A. Casilli (cfr. Casilli 2020), i curatori sottolineano che anche questo nuovo discorso è solo un nuovo capitolo dell’«occultamento del lavoro, della sua cancellazione nei fatti e della sua svalorizzazione nelle norme […], e dell’estensione e della diffusione del regno della produzione di merci» (p. 7). È evidente, quindi, che la «centralità del lavoro» ha una portata che tracima i limiti della storia della filosofia.
Con la «centralità del lavoro» Fischbach e Renault, infatti, non intendono soltanto opporsi alla perifericità o alla trascurabilità del lavoro quale tema filosofico, bensì vogliono affermare una tesi a pieno titolo. L’espressione indica più propriamente l’opzione teorica su cui la Teoria critica di stampo francese si sta spendendo negli ultimi anni (cfr. Dejours et al. 2018), cioè affermare «il potere strutturante, tanto socialmente quanto psicologicamente, tanto individualmente quanto collettivamente» (p. 16) del lavoro. Contro certe critiche del capitalismo che considerano che il lavoro sia diventato centrale solo con l’avvento della modernità (cfr. Postone 1993), inoltre, ritengono che la svolta che quest’ultima rappresenta consiste nel fatto che il lavoro ha assunto una centralità ulteriore, quella sociale: «La centralità del lavoro diventa così essa stessa sociale nelle società moderne, nel senso che il lavoro vi diventa socialmente strutturante, di modo tale che questa nuova centralità sociale riconfigura completamente e di riflesso le modalità secondo cui il lavoro è e resta strutturante anche sui diversi piani economico, psicologico e politico» (p. 19).
L’articolo di Renault su John Dewey (Dewey, l’anti-Arendt) è quasi un prolungamento dell’Introduzione. Infatti, ricostruendo l’argomentazione del tutto originale del pragmatista americano a proposito della centralità del lavoro, Renault offre una lucida esposizione dell’articolazioni delle «dimensioni» di tale problema. La prima è quella epistemologica, ovvero l’estensione da assegnare al concetto di lavoro. La questione è decisiva perché, come spiega Renault, una «concezione ristretta» esclude la possibilità di riconoscere la centralità del lavoro, laddove una «concezione allargata» la ammette (cfr. p. 369). Tra l’altro, questo spiega perché in Histoire philosophique du travail, a dispetto del fatto che il primo tipo di definizioni siano quelle più diffuse nella storia della filosofia - le rappresenta, ovviamente, Arendt, qui discussa da K. Genel (Hannah Arendt, une critique du travail: comment sortir de «la triste alternative de l’esclavage productif et de la liberté improductive»?) -, sia il secondo tipo di definizioni a prevalere: oltre a quella di Dewey (cfr. pp. 359 e sg.), si veda, per esempio, quella di Weil, esaminata da M. Labbé (Le travail chez Simone Weil: réalité, subjectivité, liberté, cfr. pp. 309-312).
Posta in via preliminare tale questione, la centralità del lavoro si decide propriamente sotto tre riguardi, cioè decretando la sua posizione dal punto di vista antropologico, dal punto di vista psicologico e dal punto di vista della teoria sociale. A tal riguardo, secondo Renault, l’originalità di Dewey consiste nel fatto che la sua argomentazione investe tutti e tre gli ambiti congiuntamente, laddove altri autori e autrici sostengono la centralità del lavoro sotto uno solo di questi aspetti. Infine, vi è la questione della «diagnosi storica» della centralità del lavoro che riguarda il ruolo del lavoro nelle varie società, in particolare in quella contemporanea.
Negli articoli che compongono Histoire philosophique du travail, se ne può quindi individuare una serie che, mentre contribuiscono ad affermare l’interesse filosofico del tema del lavoro, alimentano la prospettiva «forte» della centralità del lavoro e la esplorano secondo le diverse prospettive degli autori che vengono discussi. A proposito della centralità del lavoro dal punto di vista antropologico, ad esempio, sono di grande interesse le pagine del ricco esame che Merker dedica alla concezione aristotelica di schiavitù (L’esclave-Organon d’Aristote: entre machine-outil et homme augmenté). L’inattesa conseguenza delle riflessioni di Aristotele sullo schiavo e il lavoro, infatti, è la sanzione dell’«inclusione indelebile della problematica del lavoro nella condizione umana» (p. 154). H.C. Schmidt Am Busch, invece, esaminando i Lineamenti di filosofia del diritto di Hegel (La valeur du travail: sur l’actualité de la théorie hégélienne de la société moderne) si propone indagare «il valore non monetario del lavoro» (p. 213) tanto per l’individuo quanto per la società.
Tra gli autori che compongono suddetta serie, ha un peso specifico Marx, in quanto è uno degli autori di riferimento per chi sostiene le «obiezioni storicistiche» alla centralità del lavoro (cfr. Deranty 2013). Dapprima, J. Quétier (Marx et le travail) ricostruisce la posizione di Marx a proposito della centralità del lavoro: essa è cruciale tanto per la sua antropologia quanto per la sua analisi del capitalismo e le sue prospettive emancipative. Per riprendere le parole di Quétier, la centralità del lavoro è per Marx «problematica: da una parte perché occultata, dall’altra perché incompleta» (p. 233). Quindi, Fischbach (Le salariat Le salariat doit-il quelque chose à l’esclavage? Capitalisme, esclavage et salariat selon Marx) si concentra su questo secondo aspetto, cioè sulle ragioni per cui, secondo Marx, la centralità del lavoro non può essere realizzata nel capitalismo. Quest’ultimo, infatti, non solo conserva la schiavitù ma ha «una tendenza permanente» (p. 345) a reinventarla e congiungerla con il salariato e con nuove forme indirette di subordinazione del lavoro.
In definitiva, grazie al consistente novero dei filosofi e delle filosofe che sono prese in esame, Histoire philosophique du travail persegue l’obiettivo di rendere meno «fantasmatica» l’esistenza del tema del lavoro nella storia della filosofia (cfr. p. 10). D’altro lato, Histoire philosophique du travail segnala l’interesse e l’urgenza di ampliare e sviluppare, se si accetta la metafora, il cantiere del «potere strutturante» del lavoro ovvero della sua centralità.

L’ornamento. «Cahiers philosophiques» n. 162/3
Recensioni / Febbraio 2022Il tema dell’ornamento sta al centro del numero 162 dei Cahiers philosophiques, pubblicato da Vrin nel terzo trimestre del 2020. Il volume non pretende di offrire un’analisi sistematica del suo oggetto d’indagine: piuttosto, mimando la natura poliedrica e irriducibilmente ambigua dell’ornamento stesso, il numero di rivista mette in scena una serie di interventi in cui temi e problemi ritornano e variano da un contributo all’altro, affrontando la questione dell’ornamento da prospettive diverse, che talvolta s’intersecano, e partendo da casi sempre specifici e singolari.
Ad aprire il volume è l’articolo di Bernard Sève, in cui l’indagine viene condotta da un punto di vista ontologico. Una storia e teoria dell’ornamento a cavallo tra diciottesimo e diciannovesimo secolo è invece offerta da Claire Pacquet, la quale rivolge la propria attenzione alla querelle berlinese che ha visto tra i suoi protagonisti autori del calibro di Moritz e Goethe. Marie Schiele, con un testo sul panneggio in Aby Warburg, e Rémi Labrusse, con un intervento dedicato all’arabesque, in maniere diverse mostrano come l’ornamento possa andare a perturbare il regime rappresentativo occidentale. Il testo di Aurélie Ledoux si articola invece intorno a questioni di ordine politico. Il volume si chiude proponendo la traduzione in francese di alcuni testi classici sul tema: l’introduzione de Il senso dell’ordine di Ernst Gombrich (1979), in cui l’ornamento, inteso come pattern, viene indagato con strumenti psicologici e biologici, e due conferenze di William Morris, intitolate L’arte e i suoi produttori (1888) e Conferenza sulla collezione di pittura della scuola preraffaelita inglese (1891). Le traduzioni, realizzate da Laure Bordonaba, sono precedute da un suo commento introduttivo.
Come gli autori mostrano fin dalle prime pagine del volume, l’ornamento rifiuta non solo una definizione univoca, ma anche una collocazione chiara: pullulando, accidente fantasmatico separato dal suo supporto sostanziale, esso è in grado di migrare, andando a innestarsi nei più diversi contesti. Basti pensare alle grottesche, motivi ibridi di derivazione antico romana che mescolano il registro dell’umano, dell’animale, del vegetale e del geometrico (fig. 1), o alle arabesques, volute fitomorfe di origine islamica: soprattutto a partire dagli scavi di Ercolano (1738) e Pompei (1748), questi motivi ornamentali hanno avuto la capacità di circolare come vere e proprie formule di sapore warburghiano, andando a “infestare” le produzioni artistiche più disparate, dal disegno alla danza.
Proprio la capacità di attraversare i diversi linguaggi artistici fa dell’ornamento un elemento di straordinaria rilevanza nel mettere in discussione il paradigma moderno dell’autonomia dell’arte, come si evince dagli articoli di Sève e Pacquet. L’ornamento, “concetto transartistico” (p. 9 e ss.), evidenzia non solo la continuità tra pittura, scultura, musica, danza e così via, ma permette anche di ripensare i rapporti tra arte alta e arti applicate, mettendo in luce zone di fertile commistione (p. 25). Il tema è anche al centro delle preoccupazioni di William Morris (1834-1896), che individua proprio nell’ornamento l’area di intersezione tra le proprie posizioni politiche ed estetiche. Morris, unendo la militanza socialista all’attività artigianale presso il movimento Arts and Crafts, promuove una concezione secondo cui “tutta l’arte è ornamentale” poiché tutta l’arte – dalla minore alla maggiore – si dà nell’articolazione ad un ambiente. Il museo, “luogo melanconico” (p. 131), strappa invece l’opera alla vita. Portando avanti una critica d’ispirazione marxista all’industria e alla distruzione del fare artigianale, Morris pone l’ornamento al centro del proprio “pensiero ecologico” (p. 136): se il capitalismo si impernia su pratiche di separazione e parcellizzazione, l’ornamento, nozione relazionale, segnala invece l’essenziale giuntura tra arte e contesto. L’arte, per Morris, è “socialista per essenza” (p. 136): essendo ornamentale, essa è relazionale, e non può essere separata dal politico.
D’altro canto, proprio l’ambiguità che anima intimamente l’ornamento fa sì che esso possa essere letto anche in una chiave politica molto diversa. È ciò che viene evidenziato nell’articolo di Ledoux: partendo dalla tesi di Siegfried Kracauer su La massa come ornamento, in cui si rinviene un’omologia strutturale tra la parcellizzazione del lavoro nell’organizzazione tayloristica e le composizioni di ballerine che verranno poi esibite in maniera eminente dalle coreografie per cinema di Busby Berkeley, l’autrice analizza l’“impensato fascista” che può venire ad animare il motivo ornamentale. Qui, la massa umana che diviene ornamento è il correlato estetico dei modi di produzione capitalista: “la ballerina, come l’operaio” (p. 79), una volta sussunta nell’insieme perde il proprio valore individuale.
Fenomeni come quello delle Tiller girls di fine Ottocento o delle Rockettes americane, in cui il corpo individuale sparisce e la sincronia dei movimenti dà vita a formazioni astratte, dall’apparenza quasi inorganica, ci permettono di volgere l’attenzione alla natura morfologica dell’ornamento. Aspetto poco esplicitato nel volume, il carattere anzitutto morfologico di ogni motivo ornamentale anima però implicitamente tutti gli interventi, in particolare quelli di Pacquet e Labrusse: si tratta, ad esempio, della “gratuità formale” delle arabesques (p. 58), “forme mute” che eccedono la figurazione (p. 59) e che, nella loro qualità puramente plastica, autonoma rispetto a significati e finalità estrinseche, quasi si configurano come astrazione ante litteram. L’arabesque, forma errante che, come ha notato Moritz, incarna il gesto che la traccia e sorge da una pulsione (un Trieb) di decorazione (pp. 34-38, 69), ha dunque carattere “capriccioso, arbitrario, non mimetico” (p. 33). Questa indulgenza formale, sganciata da ogni possibile dinamica di riferimento, denota il peculiare erotismo dell’ornamento: se già Goethe evidenziava la sensualità dell’arabesque (p. 33), non pare azzardato rinvenire qualcosa come un “sex appeal dell’inorganico” (secondo l’espressione benjaminiana recuperata da Mario Perniola) all’opera anche nelle formazioni delle chorus girls. Il luogo dell’erotico non è, qui, il corpo della singola ballerina; l’erotismo riguarda piuttosto la composizione nei suoi tratti irriconoscibili e inorganici, puramente morfologici.
La gratuità formale dell’ornamento si lega, evidentemente, alla questione della rappresentazione. Come mostrano Schiele e Labrusse, l’ornamento non sembra tanto negare il regime rappresentativo, quanto deviarlo dal suo interno: l’arabesque orientale, ad esempio, va a innestarsi nell’immaginario occidentale secondo la logica della hantise, in cui l’infestato e l’infestante non sono mai esenti da contaminazioni reciproche. È così che la perturbante alterità dell’arabesque, interiorizzata dall’Occidente, può introdurre una frattura nel regno dell’oggettività rappresentativa a cui l’immagine mimetica fa capo (p. 57). Anche nelle analisi che Warburg dedica a Botticelli sono proprio gli elementi secondari a creare uno spazio in cui è possibile il prodursi di novità stilistica. Le capigliature e più ancora i panneggi, “estensioni inorganiche dell’individuo” o “organi indolori” (p. 49), sono ornamenti espressivi nella misura in cui essi danno forma grafica all’interiorità del personaggio introducendo movimento nella sua figura; questi elementi, “margini della rappresentazione”, costituiscono delle “zone di sovversione in cui progressivamente si elaborano le trasformazioni di stile” (p. 44). Marginalità e minorità dell’ornamento si convertono così nel suo punto di forza, in ciò che ne fa un oggetto dal potere trasformativo se non addirittura sovversivo.
Tuttavia, la secondarietà stessa dell’ornamento può essere messa in questione – non per negarla tout court, quanto piuttosto per evidenziare come anche in questo caso la natura ambigua della dimensione ornamentale richieda una complicazione ulteriore. Si tratta dell’operazione teorica condotta da Sève nel suo testo. In prima battuta sembra possibile affermare semplicemente che “l’ornamento non esiste in sé, [poiché] ogni ornamento è ornamento di qualcosa che lo precede ed è da esso indipendente” (p. 11): la sua secondarietà ontologica appare tanto più evidente qualora si considerino oggetti come le cornici (di cui basamenti, piedistalli, paratesti e così via non costituiscono che delle variazioni). La cornice presenta il quadro; il parergon, soglia ornamentale, permette di accedere all’opera (all’ergon). In questo senso, la secondarietà dell’ornamento risponde anzitutto alla funzione transitiva di presentazione. Eppure, come nota Sève, ci sono casi in cui l’ontologia dell’ornamento si rovescia ed esso diviene elemento “primo”, intransitivo, pura manifestazione di sé. Casi del genere possono essere osservati nel dominio del vivente, se si sceglie di adottare una prospettiva antiutilitarista: autori come Roger Caillois e Jacques Dewitte permettono di guardare a certe forme e colori animali come a casi in cui in natura si dà una dépense formale, un eccesso che non risponde a valori ed esigenze estrinseche (fig. 2). L’ornamento, qui, è quell’auto-presentazione, quell’esuberante manifestazione priva di destinatario (l’unadressierte Erscheinung di Adolf Portmann) che caratterizza anche alcuni motivi ornamentali realizzati dall’uomo: per usare le parole di Caillois, citate da Sève, si tratterebbe di comprendere “i quadri dei pittori come la varietà umana delle ali delle farfalle” (p. 22). Ancora una volta, la marginalità dell’ornamento cambia di segno e viene ad esibire una forza dirompente, seppur sottile: concetto non solo “transartistico”, capace di attraversare i confini tra le diverse arti, l’ornamento appare ora in grado di superare anche il partage tra natura e cultura (p. 23), nell’ottica di una comune e pervasiva profusione di forme.
